179: Craig Janssen on Scenario Mapping

This episode runs 46 minutes.

This Episode

It’s the time of year when firms are planning for 2021, but how do you make plans when there are so many uncertain variables? (SWOT just doesn’t seem to cut it in an environment like this.) You still need to plan, but the rules have changed. It has to be more agile. (And you have to be able to pull it off 10x faster.) Even if you can’t make a dependable strategic plan when variables are changing quickly, you can do scenario mapping to equip you to make the best decisions possible. Join Craig Janssen, Managing Director of Idibri, for an interactive session on what professionals need to know about scenario mapping when everything is shifting.

Most strategic plans are paperweights.
They don’t provide clarity for the goal, simplicity in an action plan, or accountability.  Most importantly they don’t:
  1. Address the emotional conditions of the people engaged in the enterprise or
  2. Structure themselves to be flexible to address an unknown and scary future.
Its starts with us as individuals.  We are highly emotional creatures and most strategic plans attempt to supplant data for emotional engagement – and expect positive and enduring outcomes.

Scenario mapping allows us to test outliers and determine what core skills, systems and capabilities will provide us with the best protection for the future and the best capability for rapidly adapting to a new view of reality.
